Some countries in Europe introduced apps to support contract tracing, which is an essential tool in the prevention of COVID-19 transmission. These apps raised both technical and policy challenges. Technologically, it proved harder than expected to design apps for this purpose. Privacy concerns have also arisen around how data are collected, stored, and used by health professionals and public health services. This has hampered the uptake and utility of apps in contact tracing. It has also pushed countries towards using digital infrastructure provided by Google and Apple. In practice, few countries in Europe had more than one in five residents download the apps. This webinar focuses on discussing what we can learn from the experience of COVID-19 applications to improve the utility of digital health technologies and what is the future of digital health technologies after the pandemic
