Overview
The collection of data on deceased persons (Medical report on a deceased person, NIJZ 46) is the main source data on the mortality of the population and includes data on all residents of Slovenia who are died in the territory of Slovenia or abroad in the reference year. The basic purpose of the collection is prevention premature mortality. Data on the causes of death are also an important source of information for monitoring, planning, management and development of health activities, for evaluation health status of the population, and they are also the basis for reporting and for international comparisons within the framework of obligations to the European Union, the World Health Organization and others.
The collection of data on deceased persons contains basic personal information about the deceased person, namely name,
surname, date of birth, date of death, information on the place of residence of the deceased, his marital status, and place of death, as well as information on all circumstances and causes of death. The collection represents a standardized a method of data collection that has not changed significantly over a long period of time. The main ones content changes occurred in the recording and coding of the underlying cause of death that followed development of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) with all coding recommendations and guidelines.
The content of the collection is supplemented with data from secondary sources, namely the Central Register of the population, Cancer Registry, Tuberculosis Registry, Notification of injuries at work, Records of infectious diseases diseases, and databases of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia.

Open data are available at https://podatki.nijz.si/ where the data in aggregated format could be found and select for different needs.
Access to microdata for research and analytical purposes (for registered researchers, researchers in public administration and registered research institutions) is also provided.
Application form for the anonymised microdata is available at the web page: https://www.nijz.si/statisticna-pisarna
Researchers shall send the completed application for obtaining microdata by e-mail to statisticna.pisarna@nijz.si, or by post to NIJZ. Requests are then handled by internal Committee for Data Protection. If the application is approved, the agreement on data transmission is signed by researcher and NIJZ. Usually, data could be obtained at safe centre at NIJZ premises in Ljubljana, and/or on CD/USB (for the data on small sample).
