The overall determinants of the child health and development context are the domain which the CHILD Project sought to address, with a particular focus on responsibilities within the health sector, but with a strong inter-sectoral viewpoint as to other policy and service responsibilities too.

CHICOS (Developing a Child Cohort Research Strategy for Europe) was a project conducted within the European Union’s 7th Framework Programme. Its overall aim was to improve child health across Europe by developing an integrated strategy for mother-child cohort research in Europe.

The main objective of the Action is to advance scientific knowledge about ways of improving maternity care provision and outcomes for mothers, babies and families across Europe by understanding what works, for who, in what circumstances, and by identifying and learning from the best.

The BRIDGE Health project aimed to prepare the transition towards a sustainable and integrated EU health information system for both public health and research purposes. 

The specific objectives of the project are:

- to contribute the conceptual framework for a sustainable health monitoring and reporting system;
- to evaluate and improve the core set of European Core Health Indicators (ECHI);
- to strengthen the use of the Healthy Life Years (HLY) indicator;
- to ensure comparability and reliability of data generated by national health examination surveys;
- to maintain and expand work on harmonised European wide Human Biomonitoring (HBM) surveillance;
- to improve and strengthen information and data collection on reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH);
- to maintain and strengthen the implementation of population based registries for chronic diseases;
- to maintain, strengthen and expand the platform for injury surveillance;
- to maintain, strengthen and expand a platform based on health care administrative data;
integrate approaches for health and health care monitoring and reporting;
- to develop tools to monitor and evaluate health care systems;
- to develop a blueprint to integrate population health information;
- to develop a blueprint to integrate health care information systems using existing data sources.

1)Evaluate/improve the harmonization of individual data on health, lifestyle and other exposures;

2)Develop/implement harmonized definitions of diseases;

3)Improve biobanking and research technologies and develop innovative solutions facilitating high-quality, fair access to samples and data;

4)Provide free transnational access by users, through study proposals selected by an open, pan-European call;

5)In the framework of these studies, generate and provide access to whole genome sequences, transcriptome, proteome, metabolome and methylome data;

6)Build new public-private partnerships involving large-scale prospective cohorts, and strengthening existing ones, allowing transparent industrial access to academic expertise;

7) Build a network transferring the expertise of established European large-scale biobanks to new biobank initiatives under development in other countries.

The Aphekom project seeks ultimately to help reduce the respiratory and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality caused by exposure of urban populations to urban air pollution (AP) in Europe.By developing and delivering new, reliable and actionable information and tools tailored to their needs, Aphekom will enable decision makers to set more effective local and European policies; health professionals to advise vulnerable groups better; and individuals to change their behaviour.

To advance the understanding of the combined effects of factors that cause poor lung function, respiratory disability and the development of COPD

Strengthening the use and impact of quality HTA results in hospital settings, making available pragmatic knowledge and tools to boost adoption of hospital based HTA initiatives. The project also aims at creating an adequate ecosystem where formal coordination among existing hospital based HTA initiatives and liaison with national and regional agencies will flourish.

Combining and integrating on-going cohort studies in order to produce evidence on ageing-related health characteristics and determinants in Europe, and their socio-economic implications.
